Emiliani’s Research Papers

MLE Research Papers 2

As a former university professor and now emeritus professor, one of my job requirements was to do research in my fields of interest, write papers, and submit the papers for review and eventual publication in peer-reviewed academic and practitioner journals. I have loved doing research and writing from my days as an undergraduate student, where I did a bachelor of science thesis on the topic of metallurgy. So after my time working in industry, I looked forward to focusing on research as well as teaching, all with a practical, not theoretical, orientation.

As a result of my business experience, I switched from engineering to the social sciences: leadership and management, and supply chain management. In doing that, I also dove into management history and higher education.

For many years (1998-2015), I focused on writing peer-reviewed research papers. Then in 2003, I started focusing on writing business books (not textbooks), to leverage my business and research experiences. And finally, from 2015-2023, I focused exclusively on writing books.

Below are lists of my peer-reviewed research papers and technical magazine articles. I have collected these into compendiums of .pdf files that you can download and read. Click here to view a complete list of publications.

PEER REVIEWED PAPERS
Lean Leadership and Lean Management

In 1994, almost immediately after participating in my first Shingijutsu kaizen, I saw the need to study and understand the mind of leaders. what I call “Genba 1.” Nobody was doing research on that at the time. So-called “Lean leadership” did not become an item of interest in Lean world until around 2010. Genba 1 has always been the primary barrier or greatest opportunity, depending on one’s viewpoint. It is fundamental to figuring out how to advance progressive management. That’s why it has long been my area of interest. Also see my books on the subject, as well as those that specifically focus on why most top leaders resist, reject, or ignore progressive management.
